“Biggest skiing in America?” This reporter was skeptical but the numbers don’t lie. Big Sky plus Moonlight Basin, two contiguous southwestern Montana resorts, total 5,512 acres and are now accessible on a single lift ticket. What the vacationer gets is a rugged 4,350 feet of vertical terrain, with plenty of room for amiable cruising skiers and snowboarders and powder hound experts alike.

Lone Mountain Dominates Big Sky

The lifts and runs for these resorts criss-cross beneath stark treeless, almost Matterhorn-like Lone Mountain. Below is a pedestrian-oriented mountain village with hotel, condo and cabin lodging in every price range. Small wonder it is popular with families as well as multi-generational groups that can share a large house or condo without taking out a small-business loan.

Big Sky was the dream of legendary newscaster Chet Huntley, although it’s been expanded over 30 years by the pros from Boyne in Michigan. Moonlight, on the north flank of Lone Mountain, is newer. The two resorts once fought each other but now the skiing or riding between the two is seamless and friendly. At either there seems to be no such thing as a lift line.
